Rock Solid Warrior: Staff Sgt. Daniel Holcomb

  • Published
The 386th Air Expeditionary Wing's Rock Solid Warrior comes from the 386th Expeditionary Medical Group

Name: Staff Sgt. Daniel Holcomb

Unit: 386th Expeditionary Medical Group

Duty Title: NCOIC, Food Safety and Sanitation

Home unit/station: 72nd Aerospace Medicine Squadron, Tinker AFB, OK

How do you support the mission here? I perform food facility inspections on all establishments at our location. Inspections are conducted according to the Federal Department of Agriculture U.S. Public Health Food Code to ensure our facilities are adhering to operating procedures and standards. Food code standards ensure the health of our base population and are crucial in preventing a foodborne illness outbreak, which could cripple the wing's mission. Additionally, I inspect public facilities such as the gym and pool for cleanliness.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? Stateside I have worked all sections in my career field with most time spent in the medical standards consisting of overseas clearances, profiles and deployment medicine. Being deployed we work within traditional Public Health fields such as communicable diseases, disease non battle injuries, food safety sanitation and of course getting educational information out to the public. I also work in a two-man shop compared to my 17 active duty coworkers stateside. This is a big change, between the two of us we see everything concerning public health here, and the issues that come up here are far more variable than my home base.
