Rock Solid Warrior

  • Published
This week's 386th Air Expeditionary Wing Rock Solid Warrior comes from the 386th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron.

Name:
Senior Airman Nick Marzinzik

Job: Readiness and Emergency Management Journeyman

Unit:
386th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron

Home station: 182nd Airlift Wing, Illinois Air National Guard

How do you support the mission here?
The Readiness and Emergency Management Flight prepares and responds to natural disasters, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks, major accidents, and hazmat-related incidents.

How many times have you deployed and what makes this deployment unique?
This is my first deployment to U.S. Central Command, but I backfilled in United States Air Forces in Europe for four months last year. This deployment is unique because the majority of Airmen in the Civil Engineering Squadron here are members of the Air Nation Guard. When I was assigned to USAFE, I was one of the few Guard members on the entire base. It feels more like home when I can work with people I know from my home station.

My greatest satisfaction is demonstrating on a daily basis that members of the Air National Guard are full partners in the Total Force, with the same level of professionalism and commitment to excellence you would find in any Air Force member.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base?
As a member of the Air National Guard, the main difference between home life and the deployed experience is the amount of time I spend with coworkers. Back home, we see each other as necessary for TDYs and annual training throughout the year, and twice a month for unit training assemblies. Here, I see my coworkers seven days a week. I live with them and get to know them on a different level.

We also don't have to worry about sand and dust storms back home. We have flooding and tornadoes instead.
