Rock Solid Warrior Published July 30, 2010 SOUTHWEST ASIA -- This week's 386th Air Expeditionary Wing Rock Solid Warrior comes from the 386th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (Blue Aircraft Maintenance Unit). Name: Senior Airman Daniel DeHerrera Unit: 386th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (Blue Aircraft Maintenance Unit) Duty Title: Guidance and Control Systems Technician Home station: 317th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas How do you support the mission here? I perform and oversee flightline avionics maintenance on the C-130 aircraft. This ensures proper operation of avionics during sorties throughout the Central Command Area of Responsibility. I also perform NCO duties by providing opportunities for technical growth for the technicians I supervise. How many times have you deployed, and what makes this deployment unique? I have been deployed three times. This deployment is unique because I'm in a position of greater responsibility, serving as the lead Airman for my shop on the A.M. shift (from midnight to noon). Along with performing the daily duties of an avionics technician, I'm responsible for the well-being of all the Airmen I supervise. How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? My job differs here because we are faced with the challenge doing more with less. We are responsible for the proper operation of avionics systems on multiple C-130 aircraft but have a fewer technicians than we would at home station. No matter where I serve, however, one thing remains the same: My job is important because it directly impacts the mission; if I can't fix a problem, missions will be delayed or even cancelled. Furthermore, if I do not perform my job correctly, lives could be lost or aircraft could be destroyed.
