Commentary: Positive thinking promotes success while deployed

I am told that during his time in command, Gen. George S. Patton is said to have noted: "Things are never as good nor as bad as your commanders tell you." Over time, this thought has been realized over and over so it has entered my little book of truths. But, being a truth and living that truth are not one and the same. How often have you found yourself in the "react" mode rather than "respond" mode?

During the past five months, I have observed this wing move with efficiency and effectiveness to accomplish its many missions. At every point, I've observed the excellence that is associated with being a part of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing family. (Note: That means the 386th AEW, 387th Air Expeditionary Group and 586th truckers now combined into the 387th AEG.) You are the "go to" folks for airlift of passengers and cargo, ground cargo transport, support of personnel, maintaining the fleet and maintaining the human side of the equation through Expeditionary Medical Squadron, Combat Stress or Air Evacuation missions. You're not afraid to suggest change if it will enhance the mission. Outcomes matter -- and you've got that wrapped up.

However, the deployed location does provide challenges for the people side of the equation. Constant close quarters with the same people 24/7, isolated in a mono-colored environment and exposed to risk, can try the character of the very best. Staying calm and focused when it's hot (130 degrees Fahrenheit) and dirty is trying. We've seen it with the rivalry between different airframe operators, between maintainers and operators, and even when folks insist something is black and white when we all know that shades of gray exist. It is during these times that the recent words of our operations group commander come to mind: "Assume Goodness!" When you want to react -- assume goodness -- and then respond. This truth will serve you well.

Stay cool and don't forget to hydrate.
