SOUTHWEST ASIA -- This week's 386th Air Expeditionary Wing Rock Solid Warrior comes from the 386th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron.
Name: Senior Airman William Hairston Jr.
Unit: 386th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron
Duty title: Fly away security team leader
Home unit/base: 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, Vogelweh Air Base, Germany
How do you support the mission here?
As aircrew, I perform duties to secure the movement of military cargo and personnel in and out of the area of responsibility in direct support of Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. I am responsible for securing and protecting C-130 aircraft and all assigned personnel. I protect against potential threats and security breaches of in-flight passengers. Additionally, I am responsible for providing ground security for all operations and surveillance of military passengers and cargo that enter and exit the aircraft. Lastly, I conduct airfield surveys to improve security of Air Force resources and personnel.
How many times have you deployed and what makes this deployment unique?
This is my first deployment and I feel the mission I complete is unique because I play a vital role in securing and protecting multiple U.S. military protection level resources and all its essential personnel. Completing my mission allows those personnel to perform their jobs supporting Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, which is moving essential personnel and supplies to ground troops downrange.
How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base?
The mission I am fulfilling as FAST team leader is unique; it allows me to see the flying side of the Air Force. It does have the same support concept as my home unit. I protect all personnel and resources from potential threats at any cost. However, I am fulfilling the security aspect with a smaller support system and fewer resources. This duty is unique and a great learning experience and will make me a better leader and Air Force Airman.
