Rock Solid Warrior Published Aug. 16, 2009 387th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Airman 1st Class Edgardo Pagan Deployed Unit: 387th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron Home unit: 62nd SFS McChord Air Force Base, Wash. How do you support the mission here? I support the mission here in different ways, but each one is directed to the same goal and purpose. When I am posted as an entry controller I ensure the safety of all personnel and resources. I ensure that personnel entering have their proper credentials and they are authorized to be on the installation. As an Armorer, I am responsible for $500,000 in equipment issued on a daily bases. I perform alarm monitor duties with the Tactical Alarm Security Systems. I control and monitor the activity of all on duty security forces, monitor all sensors, and dispatch patrols as needed. I also provide internal security for the installation. I conduct perimeter checks throughout the installation, ensure all individuals within are authorized and report up my chain of command when suspicious activity is expected. How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? This is my first deployment and what makes it so unique is the experience of finally doing what I was taught and trained to do since tech school. From the first day all I was taught was the security forces mission and our part in the Global War on Terrorism. That is why I joined the Air Force and why I trained so hard. I volunteered for this deployment and realized what my job is really about, the importance of security forces in today's Air Force. I see there are many other men and women from different services also fighting this war with us. Being here I have proven to myself that the language barrier can be broken. I came from a country where English was not my first language, but with the help of my fellow defenders and leadership I have overcome that barrier and I scored a 94 percent on my five-level end of course test. How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? Being in a deployed location is more intense. You are expected to execute the mission that you were being prepared for at your home station. Being here makes you more aware of what is really going on with the war on terrorism and the sacrifices that we all make being in the Air Force. Your work schedule becomes more intense and as a security forces member you are expected to uphold the standards above all.
