Senior Airman Lee Robert Snyder

Job: Fuels Controller

Home unit: 5th Logistical Readiness Squadron, Minot Air Force Base, N.D.

How do you support the mission here? I direct personnel and resources to safely fuel aircraft, ground products tanks and generators for the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing. I also verify that all fuel has passed strict quality control requirements prior to any servicing. The jet fuel I control moves the aircraft transporting warriors and war fighting equipment to and from different points inside the AOR. The unleaded and diesel ground products support more than 300 leased and special purpose vehicles, keep the generators pushing the juice for tent city AC's, keep the refrigerated DFAC trailers running to keep our food from spoiling and keep all the light-alls running for security and safe working environment at night. Basically, I directly support the GWOT mission through directing and prioritizing the issue of clean, dry fuel to where ever it might be needed.

How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? This is my third deployment. This deployment is different from my others because I was operating a fuel truck on my last deployments. I was always working first-hand on the flight line issuing fuel to aircraft, and now I am controlling all the fuels operations ensuring that all the fuels trucks go where they need to at the right time in a safe manner.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? At home station I control fuel operations for B-52's flying training missions, and here I am responsible for real world missions on aircraft going all over the AOR and providing air support. As the fuels focal point I also have to manage fuel needs for sister services and coordinate with outside agencies to ensure our fuel mission supports a joint effort against the GWOT.
