Nuts! 386th Public Health Office issues warning about recalled pistachios Published April 3, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Thomas J. Doscher 386th Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs SOUTHWEST ASIA -- The 386th Public Health Office has issued a warning to Rock residents concerning recalled pistachios. The Food and Drug Administration recently recalled several brands of pistachios due to a possible salmonella risk. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. Salmonella is a bacterial infection caused by eating contaminated food, 386th Public Health officials said. "We know that the troops are receiving care packages from home and we want to avoid anyone from getting sick," said Staff Sgt. Priscila Martinez, 386th Expeditionary Medical Group Public Health Assistant NCOIC. The 386th Public Health Office has made the following recommendations: 1. Personnel should avoid eating recalled pistachio products including the following brands: Planters, Back to Nature Products, Frito Lay and Sanfilippo and Son Inc. 2. Any recalled product should be thrown away to prevent Salmonella infections in humans or other animals. This product should be disposed of in a closed plastic bag and placed in a sealed trash can to prevent people or animals, including wild animals, from eating it. 3. To determine whether a product has been recalled, personnel can search the list of recalled products at the Food and Drug Administration website or telephone your local Public Health office at 442-9894.
