Master Sgt. Steve Campbell

Communications Support Element superintendent

Home unit/base: 50th Space Communications Squadron, Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colo.

How do you support the mission here? As the lead communications representative, I directly support three squadrons consisting of 1,100 combat Airmen.

How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? This is my second deployment. It's unique because 99 percent of my customers are forward deployed to Camp Arifjan and Camp Bucca, Iraq. Knowing I helped increase the morale and improved working conditions in those places has been very rewarding. The biggest challenge was the logistics piece and getting the necessary equipment to the war fighter.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? Back home, I am the Plans and Resources Flight superintendent. That mainly consists of attending meetings, strategic planning and reviewing enlisted performance reports and decorations. While deployed, I get to wear multiple hats and insert myself wherever help is needed.
