ROCK SOLID WARRIOR

  • Published
Senior Airman Robert Burchfield

Logistics planner

Home unit/base: 49th Material Maintenance Group, Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.

How do you support the mission here? I coordinate all deployment and redeployment movement for Airmen on the base. For all deployers, I ensure they have the proper movement to their final base in the U.S. Central Command area or responsibility. For all redeployers, I strategically book them on the appropriate mission back to their home unit to ensure they depart the AOR at the first opportunity. If they are "mission complete," I work with AFCENT to deviate them on the next available flight home. I also coordinate airlift for transient personnel moving in and around the AOR.

How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? This is my first deployment. I was excited when I found out I was deploying. I didn't join the Air Force to sit behind a desk at a safe location for 20 plus years while my fellow Airmen are overseas fighting to protect our country. I am enthused to be able to play my role in the Global War on Terror.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? At home station, we deal more with maintaining accountability for equipment and ensuring Airmen are always ready to deploy. In the deployed environment, I have had the opportunity to see what my job really involves, and that is ensuring the safe return of all redeployers and getting them out of the AOR as expeditiously as possible. Being deployed has broadened my horizons, not only in my military career, but in my personal life as well. I am proud to say that I am serving my country and fellow Airmen and will be proud to do it when I am called on again. I have been blessed to have served with such an outstanding unit here on the Rock.
