67 'Mighty Marauders' selected for promotion

Approximately 200 Airmen celebrated the promotion of 67 of their fellow Airmen deployed to the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing during a ceremony here June 27 following the release of those selected for promotion to master and technical sergeant.

Air Force Personnel Center officials posted selection lists for technical and master sergeant promotions on the Air Force Portal and AFPC public and military Web sites June 26 at 8 a.m. CDT.

This release is the third major enlisted promotion release using the new Web-based process, and by far the largest release at 12,514 names.

"I had mixed emotions in the way I found out about how I was promoted to master sergeant this year," said Tech. Sgt. Paul Crisostomo, 386th AEW flight safety office, deployed from Yokota Air Base, Japan. "When I initially looked and didn't see my name on-line, I got down for a moment, then I looked at the list again and saw my name and started yelling out loud."

Although this new on-line or virtual notification process allows Airmen to find out for themselves first whether they were promoted or not, Sergeant Crisostomo said he feels the new process takes a little bit away from the tradition of having your unit leadership personally inform you of your selection face-to-face. He said some people out there are in very small shops or in one-deep positions, and with this new process, it could be a very happy and non-celebratory event all at once for some Airmen.

"I think this new process is going to take some getting used to," said Sergeant Crisostomo.

Air Force officials selected 5,404 of 24,223 eligible technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant, and 7,110 of 38,324 eligible staff sergeants for promotion to technical sergeant. The master sergeant selection rate, 22.31 percent, decreased 2.58 percent from last year, while the technical sergeant selection rate, 18.55 percent, increased .17 percent from 2007.

The virtual promotion release ensures timely worldwide access to all Airmen and their families. This is one more initiative AFPC has taken to expand on technology through delivery of personnel services via 24-hour access to Web-based personnel information.

In addition to the AFPC public Web site, the list will also be posted on the Air Force Portal, the AFPC Spotlight, and the Promotion Page on the AFPC "Ask" Web site.
