Capt. Matthew Tipton

EC-130 crew commander

Home unit/base: 43rd Electronic Combat Squadron, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.

How do you support the mission here? My unit flies in direct support of coalition ground forces. In essence we are real-time electronic attack combat air support. As mission crew commander, I employ the non-kenetic weapons system and coordinate with various agencies to accomplish the mission specific functions of each flight. This includes monitoring the tactical situation, in-flight re-planning, working with the crew to handle system malfunctions, and working with the flight crew to position the aircraft in a tactically sound location.

How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? This is my second deployment to the Persian Gulf Region. During my last deployment I was the permanent mission planning cell chief; this time I'm assigned to a flying crew. While planning the mission is a vital task, actually getting out there and hacking the mission is gratifying. Additionally, we have a great crew which makes the flying fun.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? We are in direct contact with U.S. forces as they engage the enemy, which is a very eye-opening experience. Knowing that you are providing support when it is needed most is very rewarding.
