ROCK SOLID WARRIOR Published Jan. 16, 2008 43rd Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Capt. Jason Mountain EC-130H Compass Call co-pilot Home unit/base: 43rd Electronic Combat Squadron, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. How do you support the mission here? I fly the EC-130H aircraft. I execute precision electronic combat attacks for coalition air, ground, naval and special operations forces, delivering critical electronic attack fire that shield 160,000 troops on 1,000 miles of supply routes, seven cities, spread across 169,000 square miles in Iraq. How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? This is my fifth deployment. It's the first time I've been able to see a United Service Organizations show. Carlos Mencia was hilarious. How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? At home, it can be a problem flying as much as we would like, but that's not a problem here. Out here, hanging on to a tanker taking 20,000 pounds of gas, blacked out at night, then heading back for another mission is a bit different than the 5,000 pounds we're used to at home. The scenery is almost the same though; Baghdad at night looks a lot like Phoenix. It's very rewarding being able to put our training to use, applying all we've learned, and seeing the difference we're making every day for the operators on the ground.
