386 EMSG/Det 1,  LSA

A1 NCOIC, Commander Support Staff

Home unit/base: 2 MSS, Barksdale AFB, La.

How do you support the mission here? My primary responsibility is administrative and personnel management accountability for all the Air Force personnel assigned to the Army Life Support Area (ALSA). I am also tasked to account for all permanent party personnel assigned to ALSA for all branches of service. Some of the other programs I handle are emergency leave, postal representative, anthrax rosters/maintain medical records, R&R program, all mail operations, base policy letters custodian, awards & letter of evaluation programs, unit travel representative, and finance representative. I also give service members the opportunity to have a US flag flown over the ALSA. I provide an authentic certificate to reflect the date and name of person for whom the flag was flown. This program is one of the top morale boosters at this location.

How many times have you deployed and what makes this one unique? I have deployed a total of three times including Prince Sultan AB in Saudi Arabia, the International Zone in Baghdad, and now here at the LSA. This deployment is unique because I am assigned in a joint environment. My past deployments supported primarily Air Force units. At the LSA, our primary mission is to support the Army and other services transiting into and out of the AOR.

How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base? Here I act in a mini commander support staff capacity. I also have the opportunity to work with other services to include the Australian and local armed forces. My job back at home station is also very high ops tempo where I work with active duty and reserve Air Force members. There, I am the NCOIC of the evaluation section where we process an average of 300 performance evaluations a month.
