Be Vigilant About Safety Published March 8, 2007 By Capt Rickardo Bodden 386 AEW/PA SOUTHWEST ASIA -- The Rock is experiencing a rash of vehicle incidences according to Tech. Sgt. Jody Cummings, ground safety NCO. "Already in this 2007 fiscal year, we have experienced 27 vehicle incidents here. In AEF 3/4 we experienced 10 total." The reasons for these easily avoidable incidences, or mishaps are, "Excessive speed, and inattention to detail. Other personal concerns are people taking shortcuts, not paying attention and not following known standards. Our research shows if people would use a spotter (when backing up and driving pass narrow barriers) it would reduce incidences here by 50%," Tech. Sgt. Cummings said. Safety is also highlighting awareness at entry control points on base. "Lately people have hit barriers, cross arms and even come close to hitting security force personnel manning the entry control points," said Tech. Sgt. Cummings. The bottom line, according to Tech Sgt. Cummings is, "People are not aware when they drive (complacency) and driving before they become familiar with the environment."
