Members of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing came together in May and June to update aging dormitories at The Rock in Southwest Asia.

The project is giving a face lift to 26 existing buildings occupied by Airmen through the rank of technical sergeants and headed up by the 386th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron.

Airmen stepped up across the base to volunteer through soaring temperatures each week to move out the old furniture, paint, assemble beds and wall lockers, and move all new furniture into the rooms. At the same time, members of the 386th Civil Engineer Squadron made repairs to damaged walls, serviced air conditioning units, and replaced lights.

Capt. Brian Eichers, 386th EFSS sustainment services flight commander, is the project manager for the dormitory refresh. Before the project, the dormitory rooms contained mismatched furniture.

"This is a great opportunity for us to repair any damages and get the dormitories to a standard level so Airmen can get the comfort level they deserve to have," said Eichers.

Eichers also state that unusable furniture is being recycled while anything still usable is being held in storage units. From there, the used furniture will either replace furniture in the dormitories not being refreshed or given to agencies on base looking to replace worn furniture in the various offices to avoid the cost of buying new.

"It's been great seeing what Airmen across multiple squadrons can accomplish together," stated Airman 1st Class Bryson Phillippe, 386th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron and volunteer for the project. "This refresh shows that the Air Force really does care about our living and well-being while we are deployed here at The Rock."

Phillippe is deployed from the 146th Operations Support Squadron, Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, California, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and is a native of Ventura, California.

According to Eichers, the project is expected to be completed in the next six months provide all the materials ship on time.

Eichers stated, "We are thankful for all the Airmen pitching in from around the base to make this ongoing project possible."
