This week's Rock Solid Warrior is Tech. Sgt. Sylvia Goodwin. She is the executive assistant to the command chief of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing. The Tampa, Fla., native is deployed from the 90th Information Operations Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.

Q: What is your family’s military heritage (anyone else in your family who was/is in the military?):
A:
My dad was drafted in the Army, my older sister did 15 years in the Army, and my two brothers were in the Marines for an enlistment.

Q: What is your mission here (in general terms)?
A:
My mission here is to serve as the executive assistant to the office of the command chief.

Q: What are some of the best parts of your mission?
A:
I enjoy the fact that I am able to see all aspects of the mission being accomplished within the wing with working with the wing leadership daily. I’ve learned a lot in the past six months here, and I will definitely be taking what I’ve learned back to my home unit to share.

Q: What are some of the challenges you face while conducting your mission, and how do you overcome them?
A:
I really haven’t had any challenges that I’ve had to face while conducting the mission. It’s been a smooth deployment, thankfully.

Q: How does your job differ in a deployed environment vs. home base?
A:
I am admin at home as well, but I work directly for a commander not for a command chief. So it’s been different being able to see the aspects of the senior enlisted side of things instead of only the officer side of the house.

Q: How many times have you deployed?
A:
This is my 4th deployment.

Q: What makes this deployment unique?
A:
This deployment has been unique because of the people that I have been able to meet. I’ve gained some lifetime friends who I wish I could take back to my base with me.

Q: Why did you join the Air Force?
A:
I joined the military because college wasn’t what I wanted to do, and I wanted to leave Florida, so I came in right out of high school. I originally was going to do four years, but at that point in my career I was on base number three. So now, 17 years later I am still enjoying the Air Force ride.
