Editor’s note: The
Rock Solid Warrior program is a way to recognize and spotlight the Airmen of
the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for their positive impact and commitment to the
mission.
I’m Senior Airman Kera Johnson, a 387th Expeditionary Force
Support Squadron fitness specialist.
My home unit is the 99th Force Support Squadron at Nellis
Air Force Base, Nev. At home station I work in the dining facility. As part of
the support squadron, we are jack-of-all-trades members. We rotate between
various jobs, to include the dining facility, fitness, lodging, theater and
morale-boosting facilities. At home station I worked in the dining facility and
here at the Rock I work in our fitness area.
I maintain the fitness centers, annex, pool and fit tent.
Some of my daily jobs include refilling water, stacking weights, accountability
and controlling funds. I am also the base fitness program manager and I manage
the fitness space availability and non-availability schedules.
As part of my base fitness manager duties, I am
accountable for physical fitness testing members in the area of responsibility.
During member’s deployment, they have a choice whether or not they want to take
the test in the AOR.
The best part of my job is having a hand in all the
events on base. I get to help coordinate various events on base, to include fun
runs and deadlift competitions. We are the morale boosters of each base.
This deployment is unique because we are a force of
change. So many motivated and inspired people are making changes for the better
and it is great to be part of it.
Professionally, I am striving to commission and become an
officer in the Air Force as a nurse. I am also currently working toward my
Community College of the Air Force degree in fitness and hotel management. I am
also planning to obtain my personal trainer certification.
I am interested in becoming a nurse because of my
personality. I am a “mama bear” to my two younger brothers and I love to take
care of people. I also like to make a difference in peoples’ lives. If I could
be anywhere in the world, it would be on a humanitarian mission with Nurses
Without Borders. Not only could I travel abroad and discover new cultures, but
I would also affect healthcare worldwide with basic medical care while equipping
nurses in developing countries with tools to more effectively prevent diseases.
When I am not working, I enjoy running, lifting and
cycling. At my home station, I was a cycling instructor and plan to also instruct
here at the Rock. My goal is to train and run a half marathon.
I joined the Air Force to better myself, gain perspective
on life, see the world and get an education.
