Editor’s note: The Rock Solid Warrior program is a way to recognize and spotlight the Airmen of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for their positive impact and commitment to the mission.

I am Airman Dalton Haywood, a 386th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Distribution Operator. My home unit is the 366th Logistics Readiness Squadron located at Mountain Home, Idaho.

As a fuels distribution operator I refuel U.S. and coalition forces aircraft and provide support of ground product movement.

The difference between doing my job here and at home station is that here we handle various types of fuels including JP-8, Aviation, diesel and motor gasoline. There is also a higher demand for diesel fuel because of the generators used throughout the installation. I have learned a great deal about the fuels mission and equipment during my time here; it has been a great learning experience.

Some challenges I have come across in this career field is that this job can be mentally demanding because of the dangers associated with handling vast amounts of fuel. Attention to detail plays a key role in the day-to-day operations. Another challenge for me is being away from family and friends. Being in the early stages of my career, it is something I am learning to cope with. I overcome these obstacles by getting enough rest and exercise so I can maintain good mental and physical fitness. I also talk to my family and friends on a regular basis.

The best part of the fuels mission is the opportunity to see and provide fuel to different types of aircraft up close. It is rewarding and I consider it a privilege to do what I do especially knowing that the aircraft we work with support joint operations. This is a huge motivating factor for me to continue to excel in my job.

My professional goals are to gain more experience in the different sections of my job, to complete upgrade training, and to continue to progress as an Airman. My personal goals are to earn my barber’s license and to continue to better myself mentally and physically.

I joined the Air Force first and foremost to do my part and serve my country. With military service there are many responsibilities and that has taught me discipline and instilled a greater sense of pride in myself and what I do.
