PRT lights up Zabul Province Published Dec. 3, 2008 By 1st Lt. Amber Balken Zabul PRT public affairs ZABUL PROVINCIAL RECONSTRUCTION TEAM, Qalat, Afghanistan -- PRT Zabul recently finished the installation on 90 solar lights in communities across the province, a project that uses alternative energy while providing a much needed service to the people of Zabul province. The problem of lighting had originally been identified in the city of Shajoy. The citizens wanted lights to illuminate their bazaar. In the past it has been hard to conduct business after sunset because of the lack of lighting and the security risk that is involved in conducting business after dark. The lights also allow the Afghan National Security Forces to safely conduct security patrols. "We work very hard at developing and maintaining strong relationships with the local community and local leaders" said Army Maj. Gregory Ulma, Zabul PRT Civil Affairs Team Leader. The community is hungry for development and local leaders asked for lighting for the bazzarr. Already we have noticed an uptick in commerce and commerce is a sign of increased stability." Sahjoy is the largest bazaar in Zabul. The PRT choose solar lights over electric due to the lack of electrical generation in Shajoy. It will also require less maintenance for solar lights. The lights are run by the energy from the sun, and can work up to three sunless days With the help of the PRT the 50 more lights were installed in the cities of Qalat and Shar-e Safi. "The success of this project is overwhelming," said Air Force Master Sgt. Tommy Phillips Zabul PRT engineer. "We were able to provide the people of the communities with a much needed service, and increase security as well.
