An elite Afghan National Police unit, assisted by Coalition forces, detained a key insurgent leader in an early morning raid in Espandi village, Ghazni province, Nov. 14.

The combined forces conducted the raid after receiving credible information from local officials on the location of the insurgent, capturing him within minutes of initiating the operation.

The insurgent leader is responsible for the deaths of Afghan National Security Forces members, improvised-explosive device attacks on Coalition forces, and the kidnapping of humanitarian aid workers.

The ANP recovered a video showing the insurgent leader instructing fighters on how and where to emplace IEDs in Ghazni province. The evidence will be utilized to incarcerate the key insurgent leader, ensuring his criminal activities can no longer destabilize the security of Ghazni province.

The Special Response Team commander requested the name of the key insurgent commander be withheld until all members of the IED cell are detained.

During the operation, no shots were fired and no non-combatants were harmed.
