Face-to-face visits for detainees Published Sept. 23, 2008 By Combined Joint Task Force - 101 Combined Press Information Center BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan -- The United States military now provides routine face-to-face visits between detainees held at the Bagram Theater Internment Facility and their families. "We understand the positive impact these types of programs can have on the mission here in Afghanistan, particularly in terms of detainee behavior," Brig. Gen. James McConville, deputy commanding general of support for Combined Joint Task Force-101, said. "Not only do we meet the standards put in place by Article III of the Geneva Conventions, we continually work to improve processes that relate to detainees." This program was created as a result of recommendations made by the International Committee of the Red Cross. ICRC recommendations are taken into consideration and implemented whenever feasible. The existing video teleconference program, which allows direct video conversations between detainees and family members, has been proven to improve detainee behavior, helping to prompt the creation of this new program of face-to-face visits. Video teleconferences will continue to be available for detainees and their families.
