CENTAF releases airpower summaries

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summaries for Aug. 28 and 29.

Aug. 28
In Afghanistan Aug. 27, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1 Lancer provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Kandahar. The B-1 expended a Guided Bomb Unit-38, allowing coalition forces to push through an ambush and end the engagement.

A B-1 and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Musah Qal'eh. The B-1 expended a GBU-31 on a mortar position, ending the engagement.

A-10s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Asadabad. A B-1 also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Khowst.

Additionally, seven U.S. Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 27 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Balad. An F-16 expended a GBU-38 on a mortar position, ending the engagement.

F-16s also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Ad Diwaniyah, Baghdad, Baquba, Karbala and Tall Afar.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Ad Diwaniyah.

Additionally, 13 Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 35 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On Aug. 26, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew two medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Two enemy extremists with injuries sustained during a firefight required urgent care and were evacuated as a result of these missions.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemasters provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 150 airlift sorties, delivered 380 tons of cargo and transported 2,220 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On Aug. 26, U.S., French and Royal Air Force tankers flew 36 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.3 million pounds of fuel.

Aug. 29
In Afghanistan Aug. 28, a B-1 provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces near Tarin Kowt. The aircraft expended GBU-31s and GBU-38s against enemy troop positions, ending the engagement.

A-10s conducted a strike near Asadabad. The A-10s expended GBU-12s, general-purpose 500-pound bombs, and cannon rounds against enemy troop locations, ending the engagement.

B-1s and RAF GR-7s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces near Musa Qal'eh. The B-1s expended GBU-31s and a GBU-38, and the GR-7s expended an enhanced Paveway II 1,000-pound bomb on enemy positions, ending the engagement.

A-10s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Orgun-E and Qalat, and RAF GR-7s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Now Zad.

Additionally, seven Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 23 close-air-support missions in support of OEF. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, F-16s conducted a precision strike near Ad Diwaniyah. The aircraft expended a GBU-38 against an enemy position, ending the engagement.

F-16s also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad and Salman Pak.

Additionally, 15 Air Force, Navy and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On Aug. 27, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew two medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. One British, one Canadian and six Afghan soldiers with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of these missions.

C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 170 airlift sorties, delivered 460 tons of cargo and transported 3,600 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On Aug. 27, U.S., French and Royal Air Force tankers flew 36 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.2 million pounds of fuel.
