The 455th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron opened a new fitness center at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. The Cave at Pikes Park, located on North Carolina Road near Warrior Loop, opened to Service members Jan. 8, 2014.

The equipment for the new fitness center was moved from the gym at the Smack Town compound to The Cave at Pikes Park due to a higher number of military personnel.

"Pikes Park is a heavily populated area," explained U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Cristina Sullivan, 455th EFSS contracting officer representative. "The equipment we had at Smack Town needed to be available to the largest population of military."

In order to make the move happen, the equipment had to be moved using three 20 foot containers, one 40 foot container, a forklift and a Bobcat.

"While the moving happened, the 455th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron and 455th Expeditionary Communications Squadron built the base and established the shelter with a generator and the required communication equipment," said Sullivan.

Maintaining physical fitness is vital to supporting the Air Force mission. Fitness centers help promote an active lifestyle, which increases productivity and improves health within Service members.

"The Service members will have a high quality fitness center for a deployed location," said Sullivan. "It has well maintained equipment that is kept clean and orderly for use to continue and improve our required military fitness needs."

With the opening of The Cave at Pikes Park, Bagram now has four Air Force managed fitness facilities for Service members to utilize.

The Cave at Pikes Park is open from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
