Candy bomber is living history
Retired Col. Gail Halvorsen, the "Candy Bomber," is briefed by aircrew on the B-1B at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, Oct. 21. The Berlin Airlift veteran is known for his role in strengthening U.S.-German ties after a goodwill gesture of air dropping candy bars to children in East Berlin. His efforts evolved into a full-scale operation ending in more than 20 tons of candy delivered via small parachutes. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Katie Gieratz)(RELEASED)
