Searching For Hidden Dangers

A Spectrometer reads a sample of jet engine oil from a Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (J-STAR) aircraft to check for contaminating elements or metal fragments which could cause engine damage, May 14, 2009, at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia. The oil sample is being checked as part of the Joint Oil Analysis Program (JOAP) which tests oil samples from various locations in the U.S. Central Command's Area of Responsibility to ensure lubricants are performing properly. This test equipment is operated by Non-Destructive Inspectors with the 379th Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron who are deployed in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom and Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa.
