Historically, when a firefighter died in the line of duty, departments would use the tolling of a bell to alert all members that a comrade had perished. During the memorial ceremony the striking of the four-fives signified the moment of each attack on the World Trade Towers, and the end of the moment of silence, which concluded the ceremony.
