4/4/2014 -- Values + Action = Prevention
Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time we set aside throughout our force, both at home and within the AOR, to focus on educating and increasing awareness about sexual assault and prevention. Sexual assault is a crime and can only be prevented when every person understands we all have a duty to combat it. Commanders, supervisors, Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and civilians at every level must help cultivate a culture of dignity and respect, a climate of victim support and bystander intervention, and zero tolerance for sexual harassment and assault. The U.S. military does not tolerate it and, no one should condone or ignore sexual assault. That is the expectation for every team member on this base.
We must live our core values every day, protecting and taking care of one another, maintaining our discipline and professionalism, defending this region, this base and defeating our enemies.
The AUAB community will host Comedian Bernie McGrenahan on April 9th and 10th as part of our standing up against sexual assault. We will also be running a 'Candle Light' 5k on the evening of April 17th. Finally, during the last week of April, Memorial Plaza will be set up with stories of survivors and incidents that have occurred at AUAB over the last 5 years. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities available throughout the month of April to expand your knowledge and increase your awareness of how you can help combat sexual assault, provide support to victims, and prevent instances of sexual assault from occurring.
Our entire DoD community has a critical role in preventing and responding to sexual assaults to reduce risk, stop inappropriate behavior, and report crimes. Please get involved and do your part to stand up to sexual assault. When we all engage, we will move closer to a culture free from sexual assault.
